Ready to travel with us to view phenomenal art -- from home or wherever you happen to be?

Join us on Zoom as we take a virtual field trip to the Asheville Art Museum in Asheville, N.C., and explore the significance of one of the Museum’s ongoing exhibitions: Intersections in American Art.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
This exhibition marks a major reinstallation and reinterpretation of the Museum’s Collection in a much-enlarged gallery space. The thematic and contextual focuses of Intersections in American Art are informed by artistic principles exemplified by Black Mountain College. Because of its unique relevance to Western North Carolina, its important influence on the national and international art community, as well as its interest to longtime and new residents of WNC and cultural visitors from around the world, the principles of BMC presented an opportunity to develop a unique and placed-based installation.

Intersections in American Art considers multiple and sometimes intersecting narratives in American art. The project is organized to convey the multifaceted historical and contemporary stories of art and culture in WNC and Southern Appalachia, set within the broader context of American aesthetic development. The project tells the story of their area, and explore their sense of place and its relationship to and national impact on the art world.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Joining us from the Asheville Art Museum are Whitney Richardson and Kristi McMillan.

Whitney Richardson is associate curator at the Asheville Art Museum with a focus on craft, decorative arts, and architecture. Most recently, she curated Meeting the Moon (2021) and Fantastical Forms: Ceramics as Sculpture (2020–2021), and in 2019 was part of the team that curated Intersections in American Art, the Museum’s major reinstallation and reinterpretation of the Collection. Previously, she was at The Wolfsonian in Miami Beach as assistant curator and the Art Institute of Chicago as assistant registrar of exhibitions and loans. Richardson received her undergraduate degree in the history and theory of architecture from Columbia University in New York City and holds a graduate degree in the history of design and decorative arts from Glasgow University in Scotland.

A professional art museum educator since 2003, Kristi McMillan joined the Asheville Art Museum’s staff in 2015. In her role as Director of Learning & Engagement, she plans and implements programs for college-age through older adults, including tours, talks, classes, films, performances, travel, and more. She also oversees the learning & engagement team, internship, and docent programs, and has particular interests in interpretation, accessibility, collaboration, and technology. She holds an undergraduate degree in art history and French, and a graduate degree in art history, from the University of Virginia.
